The Financial Literacy Secretariat was created to improve the level of financial literacy amongst Tobagonians. The Unit is responsible for facilitating and providing accessible mechanisms for financial education and training, that will encourage Tobagonians to become more responsible financial consumers, and also allow them to capitalize on opportunities for wealth creation that are available on the island.
The Unit seeks to promote financial awareness through the co-ordination of financial education outreach programmes for educational institutions, community and youth-based organizations, faith-based organizations, employees in the workplace, the entrepreneurial community and non-governmental organizations. These programmes aim to:
- Provide Tobagonians with the tools necessary to attain lifelong financial success;
- Stimulate financial awareness amongst Tobagonians and increase their level of financial preparedness to deal with financial eventuality;
- Provide all households in Tobago with financial information and a basic understanding of the national banking and financial systems that will enable them to actively participate in the financial services service;
- Encourage Tobagonians to take advantage of opportunities that abound on the island and
- Stimulate and facilitate multi-generational transfer of wealth through financial stewardship.
The Unit is headed by a Programme Co-ordinator supported by a team of technical and administrative professionals who work closely with key stakeholders in the local financial sector, to execute informative and interactive financial education lectures and workshops for various groups and communities across the island. The Unit also welcomes requests from organizations and community-based groups that require specific training in the areas of saving, budgeting, debt management, investing, retirement planning, home ownership and entrepreneurship.
